Rise to the Moment at St George’s
In November, the UK will host the United Nations key climate talks, COP26. Young Christians Climate Network (YCCN) are working with Christian Aid in leading ‘Rise to the Moment’, a journey of prayer and action in the lead up to COP26 and St George’s is taking part.
A boat is being used as a symbol of our hope that we will rise to the moment and use this year to set sail towards a more just future.
This initiative is being led by the young people of St George’s, with help from Falkland School. We are asking you to make a paper boat that will form part of an art installation in the church. Details of how to make the boats is available via our website here. If you’d like to get involved, boats can be left at the back of church or with the office before 20th October.

Newbury Autumn Festival
St George’s Church was delighted to welcome the delayed Newbury Spring Festival to the church, for an organ recital by Charles Maxtone-Smith, Organ Scholar at Westminster Abbey on 10th September. The audience enjoyed listening to Charles put our beautiful organ through its paces.

Farewell to the Grants
On Sunday 11th July we said a sad farewell to Clive and Melanie who were leaving St George’s as they move away from the area. Clive has been playing the organ at the church for more than 40 years and leading the choir for many of those as well. It was an emotional parting for all who there, although the mood was lifted by the joy of being able to hear the choir sing outside for the first time in many months. We wish Clive and Melanie well as they begin a new chapter in their lives. We will miss them both – as one message in their farewell card read, “Thank you for all the music – what will do now?!!”

Congratulations to Kathy Winrow
We congratulate Kathy Winrow on two recent awards recognising her years of service to children and young people:
The Order of Frideswide is a recognition of those people who have made a distinctive and significant contribution to the life and wellbeing of the Oxford Diocese. Kathy has contributed significantly to the Diocese, especially in the area of education.
Kathy was also awarded an MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list for services to education.
Both are well deserved for years of faithful service.

History in the making
Revds Becky and Gary played their part in a little bit of history this week. Following a change to the law, the registering of marriages will no longer be undertaken in church during the marriage ceremony and we therefore had to formally close our Registers of Marriage. All other aspects of the marriage service remain the same, but in future the marriage register will be an online process, supported but not administered by the vicar.
