Concerts at St Johns – Coming Up

St John’s church are thrilled to be hosting three community concerts through Advent, in addition to our own Benefice concerts and services. We are working to make these as Covid-safe as possible and will be asking that visitors wear masks.
Proceeds for these concerts will go to local charities, including the Newbury Soup Kitchen.

Remembrance Sunday

There will be outdoor Acts of Remembrance at both churches on Remembrance Sunday, following the regular Sunday services.

At St George’s this will take place at 10.45am, and will be joined by the local uniformed organisations following a parade from Wash Common Park, along Battery End. The Act of Remembrance will include a bugler playing the Last Post and Reveille.

At John’s, the Act of Remembrance will take place at 10.55am.

COP26 – our Benefice response – St John

St John’s joined with St George’s to mark the pivotal time at the start of the COP26 meetings in Glasgow.

We joined with churches throughout the UK and worldwide to ring bells of alarm and rallying together from 6-6.30pm on Saturday 30th October, (maybe you heard them?)

The bell ringing was part of a longer Vigil we held in the church that evening, which was attended by many in the benefice as well as environmental activists and faith groups in the local area.

It was a deeply poignant space to think, pray and reflect, with interactive art spaces too. It felt really significant to gather with others for this moment.

COP26 – our Benefice response – St George

St George’s has risen to the moment and has a thought provoking display of boats in the church cloister lobby, created by the young people of St George’s, supported by Falkland School. Designed to represent that the climate crisis is a storm we all face but that we are not all in the same boat, as explained in our previous post. Please come and take a look any time during the next couple of weeks.

Community life returning …

The Community noticeboard is back in St George’s Annexe and it is lovely to see how many events are taking place in the local area. A real feeling that a more normal way of life is returning.

Vigil for our Home – COP26

St Johns is hosting a Vigil for our Home marking the beginning of COP26.
Please come along anytime between 6-8pm Saturday 30th October.
Alongside many churches up and down the country we will be ringing bells from 6-6.30.

All are welcome, of faith and none, to light a candle, sit and reflect, or pray.

Christians Against Poverty money course

A Christians Against Poverty Money Course will run over three consecutive Mondays, 7:30pm – 9pm in St George’s Church from November 8th. This is a free course which will help you to learn to manage your money, budget, save, and spend better. If things are a bit tight financially this may be the course for you. Whether newly retired, soon-to-be student, mum dealing with mounting bills, family saving for a wedding or everyone in between. For more information and to book a place please visit www.capmoneycourse.org or contact Nick Morris nmCAP@outlook.com.

Contemplative Prayer

Please join us, whenever you can, for this simple and mostly silent opportunity for contemplation and prayer.

Rise to the Moment at St George’s

The climate crisis is a storm we all face, but we’re not all in the same boat. For some the storm is stronger and the waves are already breaking.

In November, the UK will host the United Nations key climate talks, COP26. Young Christians Climate Network (YCCN) are working with Christian Aid in leading ‘Rise to the Moment’, a journey of prayer and action in the lead up to COP26 and St George’s is taking part.

A boat is being used as a symbol of our hope that we will rise to the moment and use this year to set sail towards a more just future.

This initiative is being led by the young people of St George’s, with help from Falkland School. We are asking you to make a paper boat that will form part of an art installation in the church. Details of how to make the boats is available via our website here. If you’d like to get involved, boats can be left at the back of church or with the office before 20th October.
